The train from Vienna to Prague: recordings in peripheral perception

This series explores the perception of surroundings while shifting between foveal vision and peripheral vision.  Foveal vision is sharp, clear and full of detail due to the high concentration of rods and cones tightly packed in a central “pit like” dip in the eye’s retinal area.   Peripheral vision is that field of vision often ignored as non-essential and yet constantly monitored, interpreted and discarded by the brain.  This series asks what the peripheral “looks” like and what visual constructs may be delivered when shifting from one type of vision to the other while on a moving train?   And what such records tell us about what lies unrealized in the periphery?

I explore shifting instantaneous perceptual moments.  Not of a single stagnant observation, but of the process of perception as time progresses and a cumulative record of fleeting imagery is formed.  These composites of physical form, spatial relationships and the passage of time shift between sharp concentrated vision and vague peripheral perceptions.  In such a space the rules of common time, motion and visual form do not consistently apply, since fleeting images and impressions may transform, overlap, and blend.  Fleeting impressions, only faintly recollected as fragments of what was there, but cannot be fully recalled, emerge and subside, shift and slide.  Forming an animated record of a journey and its memories.
